MOHEGAN LAKE – Following a second arrest in an animal cruelty case involving a Mohegan Lake pet shop, State Senator Terence Murphy is calling for the public to put pressure on the state Assembly to pass what he called “crucial legislation” that seeks to provide added protection to animals.
Recently, several arrests were made involving a chain of pet shops with a store in Mohegan Lake. Officials charged the owner and one of the managers with counts related to the care of two dogs and a kitten, two of which had to be euthanized.
In June, the Senate passed legislation authored by Murphy that would increase the penalty to a felony for several convictions of torturing, killing or failing to provide sustenance to an animal. The measure passed by a 61 to one vote.
“Animal cruelty is a key indicator of future violence toward human victims,” Murphy said.
Any action by the Assembly will have to wait until next year as both houses of the legislature are adjourned until January.
