NEW PALTZ – Open Space Institute and Mohonk Preserve have taken the wraps off the proposed route for the River-to-Ridge trail leading from downtown New Paltz to the Shawangunk Ridge.
The proposed six-mile loop trail will be accessible free of charge when it opens next year, said OSI President Kim Elliman.
“We think New Paltz can be one of the great active recreational
centers in the world,” Elliman said.  “It’s really
a world-class series of landscapes. You can be in the flats or the foothills
or you can actually have the foothills itself, so we wanted to create
recreational amenities that are equal to the natural splendors of the
region.”
Elliman said OSI has invested over $100 million over the years to preserve the land in the New Paltz area.
“We are talking about putting north of another $10 million into creating a series of trails and other amenities.”
The funding will come from a combination of OSI, the state, and the private sources.
