PORT CHESTER – The Humane Law Enforcement Unit of the SPCA of Westchester removed 35 reptiles from a residence in Port Chester after it was determined the animals were not being cared for properly and the owners were out of the country.
Those animals included turtles, bearded dragons, chameleons and leopard geckos.
Port Chester Police went to 144 Smith Street on Thursday after receiving an anonymous complaint concerning dogs there. They found 20 dogs inside and outside the residence. Reptile cages, stacked three high, were found on the front porch with several dead animals in the highest cages.
A veterinarian determined there was no cruelty involving the dogs, which were being cared for by a family member, although they were not groomed and were infested with fleas. A notice to comply was issued.
The SPCA is attempting to contact the owners of the reptiles and the case is still under investigation.
