Several pit bull pups were found stuffed in a cage

BUCHANAN – The SPCA of Westchester arrested a Buchanan man on a charge of animal cruelty for failure to provide veterinary care for a five-month-old Dogue de Bordeaux mix that had a fractured front leg.
The SPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement Unit responded to a June 9 call from Buchanan officials that several puppies at an Albany Post Road residence were being kept in small crates and some had injuries.
The animals were found in metal crates that did not allow them to lie down or move around in a normal fashion. One animal was found to have a sizeable injury to its front leg. That turned out to be a broken leg, which was later amputated.
A warrant was issued on July 20 for Michael Champion of 3162 Albany Post Road in Buchanan where he was charged with animal cruelty.
“It is hard to imagine the pain and suffering that this puppy endured prior to being rescued,” said Shannon Laukhuf, SPCA of Westchester’s executive director. “If he had received medical treatment in a time manner, his leg may have been saved.”
