NEWBURGH – The vast majority of rental apartments in the City of Newburgh recently have failed safety inspections.
City Manager Michael Ciaravino said code compliance officers have been inspecting the homes in an effort to make them safer.
“Approximately 90 percent of the rental units that have been thus far inspected failed for basic life-safety issues such as not having the carbon monoxide detectors or smoke detectors,” Ciaravino said.  “The mailing sent out clearing indicates that we are going to be looking for these things but as we begin the rental inspections we realize that the vast overwhelming majority of the rentals do not have these most basic life-saving devices in them.”
The latest code inspections follow a tragic incident earlier this year in which three people died and seven others were injured from carbon monoxide poisoning at a house on Lander Street.
