NEWBURGH – More than a dozen people spoke out at Monday night’s Newburgh City Council meeting calling for Acting Police Chief Daniel Cameron to be named permanent chief. While everyone said he is turning the city’s crime rate around, is involved in the community and has compassion, the city has a residency law, which as it stands precludes him from being named.
The actual appointment of the chief is up to the city manager.
The council tabled a vote of support for Cameron pending further discussion about the residency requirement.
Among those in support of Cameron was Dr. Belinda Armstead-Jones, chairwoman of the city’s Human Rights Commission.
“What can be done to keep this man, because truly he has a heart, a compassion,” Armstead-Jones told the council.
City Manager Michael Ciaravino said he is in the midst of reviewing all other applications and wants to make an appointment that will stand the test of time.  He suggested that if he had to make an appointment now, however, he would select Cameron.
