WASHINGTON – A potential total of $29.5 million in fiscal year 2015 Elementary and Secondary Education Act Title 1 program funding for schools in the 17th Congressional District has been announced. The district, represented by Congresswoman Nita Lowey, includes part of Westchester County and all of Rockland County.
This year’s funding is an increase over the previous year’s allocation. It is not engraved in stone, though. The federal spending bill that includes U.S. Department of Education funding is currently making its way through the House of Representatives; it would not meet the growing needs of programs like Title 1, and contains cuts that would jeopardize funding for literacy programs and partnerships for subjects like math and science that would prepare students for the technology-driven economy, said Lowey.
