NEW YORK – Ridership on Metro-North Railroad lines increased by 2.6 percent in May over the same month last year.
Railroad President Joseph Giulietti told the Metro-North Committee of the MTA on Monday that the greatest increase was of passengers who were not taking the railroad to work.
“Commutation was just about one percent – nine-tenths of a percent; non-commutation increased 4.7 percent,” Giulietti said.
The large non-commutation increase was due in part to significantly better weather compared with previous May. West-of-Hudson data was not available from New Jersey Transit, which operates those lines.
Year-to-date, total rail ridership is up 1.3 percent with commutation ridership up 0.5 percent and non-commutation ridership up 2.5 percent.
