MOUNT VERNON – Police detectives in Mount Vernon have arrested
a suspect in the shooting of a city man earlier this month.

Juan Picart, 25, who is on parole for a previous crime, was arrested shortly
after 8 p.m. Monday at 445 South 4th Avenue.

Picart is accused of shooting a 28-yer-old Mount Vernon resident inside
a grocery store at 16 East 3rd Street. The victim sustained several gunshot
wounds, but survived.

“This brazen criminal has been apprehended and is in police custody,”
said Mayor Ernest Davis.

“His actions traumatized the community and people can rest easy
knowing that he is in jail because the Mount Vernon Police Department
swiftly got this career criminal off of the street.”

Picart has two prior arrests. In February 2008 he was arrested in connection
with a Yonkers robbery where he pled guilty to attempted robbery and was
sentenced to three years’ probation. In March 2009, he was arrested
in Yonkers on the charge of criminal possession of a weapon. He pled guilty
and served 4 ½ years in state prison and is currently on parole.
