Red Cross volunteers canvas neighborhood

MOUNT VERNON – Mount Vernon fire, police and emergency services/civil
defense departments will team up with Red Cross volunteers to install
smoke detectors in homes in the city.

“We had a successful first campaign in one of the areas most plagued
by fire,” said Mayor Ernest Davis. “We’re going to keep
up the momentum with the help of the Red Cross to keep our residents safe.”

Volunteers will be installing the smoke detectors starting in July to
help save property and lives.

Last year Mount Vernon was the second biggest recipient of assistance
from the Red Cross.

Installations will take place along North 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 avenues.

The smoke detector installations are free to residents requesting them.
