MONTICELLO – The Monticello Police Department is at its lowest staffing levels in the last 28 years.
The department’s authorized to have 34 police officers.  It is down by four right now and Village Mayor Douglas Solomon, who is the retired police chief, said they are seeking to hire two officers now and two more later.
“We are down to one detective, which makes it extremely difficult to follow up on critical investigations,” the chief said. “The guys are doing job as far as trying to hold things together. The manpower is depleted to the lowest level since I got hired in 1987.”
Solomon said village officials are currently interviewing candidates off the preferred list with a preference to selecting local Monticello residents.
