THOMPSON – The state legislature adjourns
for the year on Wednesday, but Town of Thompson officials are hoping the
secure the approval of lawmakers before then to transfer property from
the Kiamesha Lake Sewer District to the Adelaar Sewer District.

That will ensure that Kiamesha sewer district ratepayers will not pay
any of the costs related to the casino project. Those costs will be borne
exclusively by that entity.

Town Supervisor William Rieber said there is an added benefit that Adelaar
developers will provide $2 million to upgrade the Kiamesha Lake sewer
system.

“Not only won’t they impact the taxpayers with the sewer service
they are getting but they are actually helping the taxpayers because they
have agreed to pick up a considerable amount of charges that quite possibly
could have gone against the existing district,” he said.
Rieber said the casino developers have already begun installing water
and sewer lines for the massive project.

The supervisor said he is confident the Assembly and Senate will approve
the home rule request before adjournment. The measure is being sponsored
in the Senate by John Bonacic and in the Assembly by Aileen Gunther.
