Picketers claim new management has brought “negative change”

PEEKSKILL – Employees of West Ledge nursing home in Peekskill held an informational picket outside the facility on Thursday to bring attention to what they contend is the new management company’s treatment of residents.
The employees, members of 1199SEIU, say Care Rite, Inc. is not providing the resources they need to provide care for the residents.
Sara Whittaker has been an LPN at West Ledge since 1979 and she is concerned about actions the company has taken.
“All the cutbacks to the food, the linen, everything,” Whittaker said. “On Memorial Day, we had nothing special for our residents; it was like every other day; Mother’s Day, the same thing. Everything has been cut.”
Gregory Speller, a vice president of 1199, said the tenor of the facility has gone down hill.
“It’s how they treat the residents and the caregivers,” Speller said. “Since this Care Rite company came in to manage this facility, we have seen this negative change.”
Officials of the company did not our return phone calls.
