HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON – Remedial design of the selected remedy to address contamination at the Harbor at Hastings at River Street in Hastings-on-Hudson has begun.
The site, listed as a class two site on the State Registry of Inactive Hazardous Waste Sites, or Superfund sites, indicates it represents a significant threat to public health or the environment and that action is required.
Cleanup work will include installation of a sheet pile work to contain PCBs and support their recovery from the shoreline and fill areas; sediment dredging, backfilling and capping in the Hudson River; stabilization of the existing shoreline in areas that do not requirement containment of PCBs; groundwater treatment; excavated of contaminated soil on the site; and a soil cover system on the site.
The site is located on some 28 acres along the Hastings-on-Hudson waterfront, separated from the village commercial district by railroad tracks. The site is bounded on the north and west by the Hudson River and to the south by the Tappan Terminal site. A former marina borders the side to the north,
The site is zoned general industrial and is the subject of planning studies by the village.
The site is the former Anaconda Wire and Cable Company, which ceased operations in 1974. Wire operations during a period of the operations caused the release of PCBs and metals to site soil, groundwater and sediments.
A public session will be held on the remediation plans on Thursday, June 25 at 7 p.m. at James Harmon Community center, 44 Main Street.
