ALBANY – Members of the State Assembly
Republican Minority Conference on Wednesday called for the immediate shut
down of START-UP NY.  They say $45.1 million has gone into the program
to promote it with only 76 jobs being created.
Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor of East Fishkill said no jobs have been created in a number of counties in the region.
“Greene County, Columbia County, Orange County, Sullivan County, Rockland County, Westchester County, Bronx County, New York County, Richmond County and Queens County, zero START-UP NY jobs despite the ubiquitous commercials, despite the tens of millions of tax dollars spent on those commercials – zero jobs,” Lalor said. “From Albany to Brooklyn, START-UP NY successes are 44 jobs pledged – Albany to Brooklyn, over the next five years.”
Assemblyman Steven Katz of Yorktown said this is “an expensive program that is providing our state few tangible benefits.” He said the program should be canned with the remaining money allocated to advertising uses instead to give a tax cut to small businesses around the state.
“Instead of creating a playing field where the chosen few are given no taxes, let’s cut taxes universally and solve the whole problem,” Katz said.
