NEWBURGH – The Newburgh Police Department has just started a three-month test program for officers to wear body cameras.
The city council is in support of the effort.
Acting Police Chief Daniel Cameron said the cameras are being tested with the goal of working toward a full-scale body cam program.
“Our pilot program, which is a 90-day pilot program, started June 1st and it’s a volunteer officer on each shift going to wear the camera and we are going to study the benefits of it and see if there are any hurdles we have to get over,” Cameron said.
The cameras cost $800 apiece, but the company is providing them at no charge during the trial period. The same company, Watch Guard, provides the dashboard cameras on two of the city’s police cars.
