MONTICELLO – Schools in the Monticello
school district were on lock-out Friday morning after being notified by
the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office that a man with a gun fled
police custody and may be in the area.

As a result, the Robert J. Kaiser Middle School and Monticello High School
initiated their lock-out procedure at about 8 a.m. after being notified
by the sheriff’s office.

People were not allowed in or out of the building and students were prohibited
from going outside for recess while the school was under lock-out.

Monticello Police Chief Robert Mir said that about 12:30 a.m. on Friday,
police responded to a report of a criminal mischief case on Spring Street
where they encountered a 20-year-old Monticello man, who drove up to the
scene and said he had been shot. The victim was transported by hospital
to a trauma center.

Village Police are investigating with the assistance of the State Police,
District Attorney and Sheriff’s offices. The location of the shooting
was unknown.

While attending to the victim, he pointed out a vehicle near the scene
that matched the involved car. It was stopped and an individual was detained
and taken to the police station for an interview.

While officers were occupied with the investigation into the gunshot,
the criminal mischief suspect fled the police station.

No one has been charged and no weapons were recovered. Both investigations
are ongoing and police ask anyone with information to call Monticello
Police at 845-794-4422. All information will be kept confidential.
