KINGSTON – Ulster County Executive Michael Hein signed legislation to provide that medical and dental expenses incurred by county jail inmates be covered by their own private health insurance, if they have it.
Hein said until now, the county had to foot the bill for healthcare coverage for inmates.
“It insures that if someone has private insurance that their private insurance is utilized if they need medical care while they are incarcerated and it simultaneously protects taxpayers in the process,” he said.
County Legislator Peter Loughran sponsored the legislation.
“Healthcare should be available to everyone, regardless of their circumstances; however, if county jail inmates carry private health or dental coverage, it makes perfect sense for taxpayers to be the payer of last resort,” Loughran said.
