KINGSTON – The Historic Landmarks Preservation Commission in Kingston is calling for the common council to adopt a demolitions review policy.
Jennifer Schwartz Berky noted the commission has certified local government status.
“The concern that we have is whether or not they are eligible there is no review going on so what we are proposing is demolition review procedures so that anything that is proposed for demolition has to come through our process so we can assure that it’s not something that is worthy of recognition and/or contributes to the historic character of the city and this is recommended by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a best practice in historic communities such as ours,” Berky said.
The city’s plan to destroy two structures, each close to 200 years
old, and both with significance to Kingston’s Delaware and Hudson
canal heritage, “made it clear that important features of our community’s
character are undervalued and at risk,” said group Chairman George
Donskoj.
