NEW YORK – Riverkeeper has filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Transportation over its new rules for the transport of crude oil by rail.
The DOT-111 tanker cars used to transport crude oil are dangerous and
the DOT is going to phase them out, but Riverkeeper says the timeline
is way too long, according to staff attorney Sean Dixon.
“This tank car rule allows a long 10 year phase out for the worst tank cars on the rails, the ones we know shouldn’t be used to transport this material,” Dixon said.  “Ten years is way too long and there is an acknowledgement built into there is going to be disasters in that 10 year period that if we had had a quick phase out, could have been prevented.”
Dixon said those tank cars will be allowed to be retrofitted, but held
at a lower standard than any new cars that will be built in the future.
