GOSHEN – A Newburgh resident was sentenced Monday in Orange County Court to 10 years in state prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.
Leshawn Hamilton, 16, was convicted on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. He was also sentenced to 1 1/3 to four years in prison for his conviction on one count of criminal possession of a firearm. That sentence will run concurrently.
Hamilton was also adjudicated as a youthful offender on the criminal possession of a firearm charge.
On August 27, 2014, Newburgh Police responded to an apartment on Ann Street for a report of individuals entering with guns. Inside they found Hamilton, in possession of a loaded, defaced .22 caliber inside a laundry bag. His DNA was found on the gun.
On October 25, 2014, city police responded to the area of 219 Broadway for a call of shots fired. There they encountered Hamilton in possession of a second .22 caliber pistol, this time unloaded.
On December 4, 2014, Hamilton and an unidentified man, both armed with handguns, approached the passenger side of a parked vehicle with two occupants in the area of South Street. Hamilton and the other man fired several shots into the vehicle, striking both occupants, who were hospitalized with gunshot wounds to the arms and legs.
“Those who possess illegal firearms threaten the safety of everyone in our communities,” said District Attorney David Hoovler. “The three cases involving this defendant amply show just how available illegal handguns are, and just how dangerous they can be in the hands of those who would use them to inflict harm on others. Those who possess illegal guns, and those who resort to gun violence, deserve significant punishments, such as the 10-year aggregate sentenced that this defendant received today.”
