NEWBURGH – A Broadway Corridor Demonstration Project, funded with
$250,000 from Central Hudson, will develop options to redesign Broadway
in Newburgh to improve safety, enhance open space and encourage sustainability.
The city and the Newburgh Community Land Bank will jointly work on the project, which will also aim to create attractive, useful green space in two southern vacant lots and restore the façade at 96 Broadway, a chronically neglected building.
City Manager Michael Ciaravino said the project will focus on one of the prime intersections in the city – Liberty Street and Broadway—to connect the waterfront with the rest of Newburgh.
“What the project is intended to do is enable the City of Newburgh to envision its future with a first swipe at what 2015 and beyond could look like, we are looking to utilize one of the main, prime intersections in the City of Newburgh to show what it could look like when you tie in the waterfront with the rest of the core neighborhoods that are going to bring our community back to its heyday,” Ciaravino said.
Councilwoman Karen Mejia said the “transformation of Broadway is essential for the city’s revitalization.” She said the demonstration project will show what is possible and “serve as a catalyst for Broadway’s redevelopment.”
