VALHALLA – Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla has become only the second hospital in the state to receive the highest level trauma verification – level one – for both children and adults from the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons.
“Our Level One status ensures that patients have immediate access to the most modern and sophisticated resuscitation and life-support technology,” said Dr. John Savino, senior vice president for Medical Operations and director of surgery at Westchester Med. “Dedicated trauma operating rooms, an imaging center and an on-site blood bank make our trauma center a self-contained resource with immediate access to the latest diagnostic technologies and treatment modalities, which can often mean the difference between life and death.”
In New York, trauma centers are categorized as Regional Trauma Centers – the highest level – or Area Trauma Centers. As a Regional, Level One Trauma Center, WMC and its Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital are verified to provide care to the area’s most critically ill and injured patients. To date, Westchester Med is one of only two hospitals in the state, and the only hospital in southern New York, to receive the ACS verification for both adult and pediatric Level One Trauma.
