POUGHKEEPSIE – State Police Friday identified the inmate who died
at Fishkill Correctional Facility just before midnight on Tuesday, April
21 as 30-year-old Samuel Harrell. He served two previous prison terms
with the state correctional system.

Police said the circumstances regarding the death are under investigation;
however, they apparently involved corrections officers as two were injured
and treated at a local hospital.

Harrell was serving a sentence of up to eight years for criminal sale
of a controlled substance. He was convicted and sentenced in Ulster County
in 2014.

Harrell entered the state prison system on May 5, 2014 and was transferred
to Fishkill Correctional on January 25, 2015. His earliest release date
was scheduled for September 19, 2020.

An autopsy was performed, but the cause of death remains undetermined
pending toxicology reports, troopers said.

Harrell’s first prison term included two to six years imposed in
Ulster County in 2002 for criminal sale of a controlled substance and
the second included a two-year sentence imposed in Ulster County in 2009
for attempted criminal sale of a controlled substance.

One week before, another state prisoner died at Sullivan County Correctional
Facility and three corrections officers were injured. That is also under
investigation.
