NYACK – An initiative to offer customers the option of having their purchases placed in paper bags, bring their own reusable bags or carry the items home unpackaged has been endorsed by the Rockland County Legislature.
Maria Luisa Whittingham launched the “Say No to the Bag” campaign at her boutique in Nyack and with county legislators at her side on Wednesday she talked up her plan to voluntarily eliminate single use plastic shopping bags.
“It is actually taking responsibility of what you need. We have found that it has been very useful; it raises awareness and when customers do ask for a bag, they are thoughtful about it,” she said. “It is a first step and the legislature has adopted a resolution in support of our pledge.”
Whittingham, who owns Maria Luisa Boutique, is asking other retailers to
join the effort to ban the bag.
