FALLSBURG – The State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision late Tuesday released the name of the inmate who died at the Sullivan Correctional Facility in Fallsburg as Karl Taylor, 52, who was serving 27 ½-to-55 years for sex crimes in Rensselaer County and aggravated harassment of an employee in Chemung County.
State Police are investigating the death, which occurred during an assault on staff, they said.
Taylor was convicted and sentenced in Rensselaer County for three counts of first-degree rape and one count of first-degree sexual abuse.  In 2002, he was convicted and sentenced in Chemung County for one count of aggravated harassment of an employee while incarcerated at the Southport Correctional Facility.
Taylor entered the state prison system on March 24, 1995 and was transferred to the maximum security Sullivan Correctional Facility on November 25, 2014. He would have been eligible for parole consideration in 2020.
A spokesman for the New York State Corrections Officers Benevolent Association said three corrections officers were injured in the incident with two being taken to Catskill Regional Medical Center for treatment.  One corrections officer sustained a broken arm and possible head injury and a second one was being treated for a head injury.
