Truman Moon Elementary

MIDDLETOWN – As the Middletown City School Board considers closing down the Truman Moon Elementary School in the city, the common council Tuesday night voted its opposition to the move.
Speakers at the common council session said city officials should not be involved in school district business, but Mayor Joseph DeStefano leveled a lengthy attack on the school board and Superintendent Kenneth Eastwood charging the district had planned to close down the school as far back as 2008 when it build the new Presidential Park school.
DeStefano pointed to a state environmental quality review document for the new elementary school filed by the school district in 2008, which stated its plans to close down Truman Moon and Chorley elementary schools.
The mayor said the school district is misrepresenting the financial impact of closing Truman Moon, suggesting the district was purposely keeping enrollment there low.
