BEACON – A consultant has recommended
to Beacon city officials that they sell their three firehouses and build
one central facility at a cost of some $7.5 million.
The city council has yet to make a decision as it is considering its options that include closing one current firehouse and remodeling another, instead of taking on the financial burden of bonding for a new one.
Mayor Randy Casale said the council will explore possible locations to build a new firehouse.
“We discussed a resolution to give the administration the right to go out and look at sites and get prices of what it would cost to purchase to put a firehouse on them and give us some money so we can have an architect look at the sites with us, because if you pick a site, the cost of the site might be cheap, but because of what you have to do on the site, might not be worth buying that site,” the mayor said.
Casale said that if some of the current facilities are rehabilitated now and a new firehouse is built later on, the cost of construction will be higher than it is now.
