GOSHEN – An Orange County Court jury convicted a Port Jervis man on Thursday in a case of domestic violence. Joseph Williams, 61, was convicted of criminal possession of a weapon and menacing and will face up to 3 ½ to seven years in prison when sentenced next month.
Prosecutors alleged that on August 17, 2014, the victim, who had been sleeping in her bed, awoke to find Williams sitting on top of her. With one hand around her neck and the other holding a knife, Williams told the woman he was going to kill her. She called out to another person in the house, distracting Williams, giving her an opportunity to escape.
The victim called 911 and Port Jervis Police officers arrived moments later, arresting Williams and locating the knife wedged between the mattress and box spring of the bed.
“Domestic violence not only injuries and demeans the victims, but it destroys families, and requires the use of enforcement and treatment resources, that, without the violence, could be devoted to other issues,” District Attorney David Hoovler said.
