NEW CITY – Clarkstown officials are
recommending that the state approve an arrangement with municipalities
to help ease the costly burden of filling potholes.

Town Supervisor Alexander Gromack and Council Members Shirley Lasker and
Stephanie Hausner suggested that for every dollar a locality spends on
road paving and reconstruction, the state should match that amount. The
officials said that would give local governments an incentive to make
the needed funding commitments necessary to fix local roads.

They also called for the removal of road repaving from the state tax cap
formula to further incentivize local municipalities to make the needed
commitment to repair crumbling roads.

Clarkstown spends about $3 million every year to repave and repair its
roads, but with this winter’s weather conditions, they estimate
it will cost $8 million.
