NEWBURGH – The danger of freight trains carrying Bakken crude oil on the West Shore rail line along the Hudson River is apparently not the only concern of officials.
Newburgh City Manager Michael Ciaravino, who met recently with representatives of the US EPA onsite, told the city council Monday night there is another potentially dangerous cargo.
“We went down to the railroad bridges and looked at the manner in which we have our bridges that are falling apart on the very same rail lines that are carrying some very dangerous products,” Ciaravino said. “While many of us are focused on the Bakken oil concerns along the railroads, there are other concerns that actually are even more concerning, for example, chlorine, that is transported back and forth.”
Ciaravino also met with CSX officials who said they would be upgrading
railroad bridges through Newburgh that need modernizing.
