POUGHKEEPSIE – The Dutchess County
Department of Public Works is asking the county legislature for just under
$5.5 million this year for bridge, culvert and highway improvements. The
total cost of the work is $8.8 million with the state making up the difference.
The county annually appropriates funds for similar work and Deputy DPW Commissioner Robert Balkind outlined this year’s request to lawmakers on Thursday.
“While the federal government and the state government and all those folks talk about creating jobs and putting money into the local economy and building infrastructure and improving the climate for business and commerce, you folks here are actually doing it,” Balkind said. “Every year you have done it. You have provided a lot of capital project work, a lot of money, a lot of jobs and a lot of infrastructure.”
The Public Works Committee of the county legislature took no action on the financial request on Thursday.
