Five accidents involving 23 vehicles shut down I-84 in Western Orange County

Traffic detoured at exit 3 in Wawayanda

WAWAYANDA – Icy conditions Wednesday morning resulted in five accidents involving 23 vehicles in I-84 in the Town of Greenville.
The initial incident occurred at 7:14 a.m. in the westbound lanes involving three commercial and three passenger vehicles. The accident started when a commercial vehicle driver in the right lane stepped on his brakes and slid into the right guide rail causing a chain reaction of additional incidents.
The second one involved seven vehicles – five commercial and two passenger cars. That included a state DOT plow truck that was salting the left lane of I-84 westbound.
The third incident involved three vehicles, all passenger cars. The fourth incident included two commercial and two passenger vehicles and the fifth and final accident involved three passenger cars.
In total, 10 people suffered minor injuries and were taken to two local hospitals.
All of the incidents occurred in an inactive work zone with a reduced speed limit of 55 mph.
It wasn’t until after 5 p.m. that the highway was cleared and reopened.
More snow will fall throughout much of today.
