HIGHLAND – A 60-year-old Long Island man, who was visiting his daughter in Highland, and walked away from her home during Sunday’s snowstorm after a family dispute, was found hours later in the woods, suffering from hypothermia and frostbite. Police said the man’s core temperature was 80 degree, which could have proven fatal.
When he was found, state troopers wrapped their coats around the man to warm him up; he was found standing in thigh deep snow. Because he could not walk, a toboggan was secured from a homeowner to remove the victim from the woods and to waiting emergency service personnel.
State Police and Lloyd Town Police had difficulty located the man, who because of the hypothermia, was becoming confused, lapsing in and out or consciousness. It was the light from his cell phone that ultimately led police to locate him.
