WHITE PLAINS – The Community Services
Committee of the Westchester County Board of Legislators Tuesday voted
in favor of raising the legal smoking age in the county from 18 to 21.

After hearing from American Lung Association and American Cancer Society
representatives, they also voted to regulate e-cigarettes under the workplace
smoking law so that they cannot be used at indoor businesses.

Committee Chairwoman Alfreda Williams supports both measures.

“Twenty-one years of age is still a youthful age and this whole
idea is to encourage healthy habits within our young people and not encourage
what could turn out to be very bad habits,” she said.
The full board will conduct a public hearing at a yet-to-be-determined
date and time to gain public input on the proposals.
