NEWBURGH – The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will lend its support to the startup of police officer body cameras in Newburgh.
DA David Hoovler said he will help the department in the startup of the program, which has gained momentum nationwide in recent months.
“Not a lot of financial money, but basically to give them some assistance in doing it and to help them setting up essentially the protocol of filming and the retention of media,” Hoovler said.
City officials have estimated the cost of purchasing body cameras for all patrol members would run about $50,000.
Newburgh would be the second municipality in Orange County to employ body cams. The City of Port Jervis Police Department currently uses them.
