BEACON – The concept of converting municipal street lighting to LEDs appears to be catching on.
On Tuesday, the New York State Bridge Authority announced it was converting the lights on its five bridges to LEDs.  Poughkeepsie is making the switch.
Now, the City of Beacon is considering converting all of its 1,500 street lights.
The city already has a contact with Wendel Energy Services to explore the concept and now the council has allocated $40,000 for the consultants to move forward with the actual costs of converting those lights, said Mayor Randy Casale.
“It is broken out in phases,” Clarke said.  “What the LEDs would cost and then there is a different phase if we were going to do all of the traffic lights that we have that aren’t LEDs.  There’s a cost to that and there is a cost if we want to put cameras in them, and they all add up. We don’t have to do any of them. We do just the LEDs once we go out and the council will make that decision when we get to that time.”
The consultant company will issue a request for proposals for a company to first study the costs.
