NEW CASTLE – FEMA has granted an $8.7
million grant to replace a bridge over the Kisco River on the Saw Mill
River Parkway in the Town of New Castle.
The project will remove and replace the existing composite steel girder
bridge carrying the highway over the river. It is in deteriorated condition,
which is causing concern for bridge foundation failure that has led to
the repeated closing of the road during extreme weather events.
The bridge will be replaced with a new structure on the existing horizontal
alignment and an elevated profile more resilient to extreme weather events.
“It is important that FEMA addresses our failing infrastructure
due to recent storms, including Sandy,” said Jill Simon Shapiro,
New Castle Town administrator. “We are still feeling the aftermath.
Because of the ravages of the storm water, the bridge foundations are
failing. It looks fine, but the structural integrity has been compromised.
It is important that this is addressed now before it has a chance to fail.”
