WASHINGTON – As the nation marks Black History Month in February,
this is an especially pertinent year as it marks the 50th anniversary
of the Voting Rights Act, signed into law in 1965, Congressman Sean Patrick
Maloney (D, NY18) noted on Monday.

Although the nation has made “historic progress” over the last 50 years, we still “have bridges to cross,” the congressman said.
“It was only last year that the Supreme Court decided decades later to invalidate critical provisions of the Voting Rights Act, a shocking setback to the core principles of our democracy,” Maloney said. “We cannot pass up an opportunity to pass a new civil rights law that protects all Americans, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or economic status.”
Maloney said he is supporting a modern Voting Rights Act “ensuring that each and every American has the fundamental right to vote.”
