ELLENVILLE – The Ellenville Village Board and the Wawarsing Town Board have approved resolutions that commit the municipalities to stronger efforts for accommodating pedestrians, bicyclists and other non-motor vehicle transportation.
The program is coordinated by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County, which has received a state grant to fund the effort, said senior research educator Kristen Wilson.
“To develop a plan for the future to better accommodate all these different users of the streets and to make it safer for all people involved and also includes consideration of the automobile,” Wilson said.
The entire five-year grant totaled over $1 million. The ultimate goal of the program is to prevent obesity, diabetes and chronic disease. The five-year program includes healthy corner stores, community gardens, improving parks in Kingston and the Complete Streets program.
