WHITE PLAINS – Following reports of
drones spotted flying in Westchester County Airport airspace, including
one that came within a landing plane’s airspace, Senator Charles
Schumer wants rules released concerning the use of unmanned aircraft.
The sizes of those drones could not be immediately determined, although
one was reported to be a “quad-copter.”
The senator came to the White Plains airport on Friday to announce that
he has called on the FAA and Office of Management and Budget “to
immediately move forward and release much-needed rules.”
The two cases there were reported last August and September.
Schumer said drones have commercial applications that make them useful
in terms of agricultural development, real estate sales and search and
rescue missions. They are also used by government agencies and law enforcement.
He said he supports those uses but said there must be “clear limits
to their usage when privacy and safety are threatened.”
