NEWBURGH – Wastewater outflows by the New York Air National Guard Base at Stewart Airport may be causing potential contamination problems for the City of Newburgh’s water supply.
City Manager Michael Ciaravino said he wants to further explore the situation.
“Working with Riverkeeper and the Quassaick Creek Watershed Alliance, the city engineering department identified several inconsistencies with the permit renewal application submitted by Stewart Air National Guard for their wastewater outflows, which discharge directly into the tributaries of Washington Lake,” Ciaravino said. “This is where we get our water source so it is obviously a great concern to us. The engineering department is working with Riverkeeper as well as other agencies to further investigate these deficiencies to identify any potential water quality impacts to our watershed.”
A spokeswoman for the National Guard said tfollowing discussions on Thursday
that the issue was the classification of the tributaries in the permit.
There are no issues of contamination.
