Elderly man killed in crash with State Police vehicle

CATSKILL – An 87-year-old Freehold,
NY man was killed Wednesday morning when the Ford Ranger pickup truck
he was driving pulled into the path of a State Police SUV in the Town
of Catskill.

Louis Becker was transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital in the City
of Hudson by Catskill Rescue where he was pronounced dead.

Troopers said the 9:15 a.m. accident occurred when a marked State Police
SUV operated by Trooper David Walsh, a seven-year veteran of the force
assigned to the Catskill barracks, was traveling west on Route 23. Becker’s
pickup truck was going southerly on Cairo Junction Road and entered the
roadway into the path of Trooper Walsh.

A passenger in the pickup truck was transported to the hospital with non-life
threatening injuries. Walsh was treated and released.

Members of the Leeds Fire Department, Greene County Paramedics, Greene
County Sheriff’s Office and Greene County Transportation Department
assisted at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation by the State Police and Greene
County District Attorney Joseph Stanzione.
