New chief assistant Ulster DA appointed

KINGSTON – Following 32 years of public service, Chief Assistant Ulster County District Attorney John Tobin has retired. District Attorney Holley Carnright has named Michael Kavanagh as the new chief ADA.
Tobin began his legal career in 1978 when he served as a law clerk with the litigation division of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He later moved to Ulster where he worked for a local law firm. In 1984 he joined the DA’s office, but left to work for 20 years as an assistant public defender until Carnright was elected in 2008 and brought him back as his chief assistant.
Among the cases he handled during his tenure were the Daniel Malik cold case homicide and the Audelis Cruz murder.
Kavanagh began his legal career as an ADA in Dutchess County in 1998 where he was promoted to senior ADA. He later moved to Texas where he was in private practice, moved back to Ulster in 2008 where he worked for a private law firm and joined the DA’s office as a senior ADA in 2011.
