POUGHKEEPSIE – A shooting incident in Poughkeepsie Tuesday afternoon critically injured one male teenager while his opponent also sustained a wound that required a trip to the hospital.  The incident began minutes before 3 p.m. in the vicinity of the corner store at Fox Terrace and South White Street where Poughkeepsie High School students gather after the 2:40 p.m. dismissal.

(The original Mid-Hudson News report, filed from the scene as the victim was rushed to the hospital, can be found here.)

A teenage girl ran to a Poughkeepsie police officer assigned to the high school to monitor the occasional unruly dismissal and reported that someone had been shot, and provided the location.

The officers at the school went to the intersection of South White and Church Streets where they located a teenage boy on the sidewalk of Church Street (eastbound Route 44/55) with a life-threatening gunshot wound to his neck.  He was taken by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment.

The shooting began in the parking lot of a store on the corner.

The victim, who witnesses identified as “Jay Jay,” was found on the sidewalk of Church Street.  Additional witnesses were yelling that the shooter, another teenage boy who does not attend Poughkeepsie High School, had run from the scene heading west on Church Street.

Police were notified that a teenage boy had arrived at another Poughkeepsie hospital in a personal vehicle, with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his neck.  A police official said both shooting victims are known to the police.

The eastbound arterial was closed between South Cherry and South White Streets as police spent several hours collecting evidence on Tuesday evening.
