GARRISON – A career educator who previously served as assistant superintendent in Mahopac has been appointed as the Garrison School District’s new superintendent of schools.

Greg Stowell succeeds Carl Albano who officially retired as chief school administrator in September 2023.

Following his announcement Albano agreed to serve as interim superintendent while the board of education initiated a search process.

Seventeen educators applied for the position and following a vetting process, the board interviewed four semi-finalists prior to making its decision.

School Board President Sarah Tormey said she and her colleagues were “unanimous in feeling that Dr. Stowell exemplifies the qualities we aspire to see in our graduates and possesses the experiences and qualifications to lead our school community. Having served as assistant superintendent in Eastchester, this visionary leader has been at the forefront of developing and implementing multi-tiered systems of support, advancing social-emotional learning, and enhancing pupil personnel services.”

Tormey also reflected on Stowell’s days in Mahopac. “Dr. Stowell supervised both the Pupil Personnel Services and Technology Departments and led initiatives on diversity and equity, health services, as well as clinical and special education related services.

Tormey also said Stowell co-created “the Breakthrough Classroom pedagogical framework that provided professional development to all teachers on innovative and student-centric teaching strategies that allowed students to think critically and engage in deep and authentic learning that develops next-generation skills and readiness.”

While in Mahopac, Stowell also served as the chief emergency response officer and COVID administrator, “which showcased his ability to lead with innovation and adaptability, particularly during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Former Mahopac Superintendent of Schools Anthony DiCarlo said Stowell “is a dedicated, hardworking and compassionate leader and colleague.”
