George F. Meyer, 84, of Modena, NY passed away peacefully at home on November 26, 2023.

George was born January 7, 1939, in Flushing, NY the son of the late Max and Elisabeth Meyer. He was happily married to Doris Hoffman for 59 years before her passing on April 12, 2019. December 5th will be the first wedding anniversary that they will be reunited for.

George proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1968 and was stationed at Ft. Bliss in El Paso Tx. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he built elevators for Sedgwick Machine Works in Poughkeepsie. After a layoff he made his way to the United States Military Academy where he was a carpenter and retired in 1999 as a Planner Estimator after 27 years of service.

George is a past member of the Steuben Society of America where he celebrated his German heritage, he was a first generation American as both his parents immigrated from Germany.

George was also a life member of the Modena Fire and Rescue Department where he enjoyed participating in social events and performing fire police duties. He followed in his fathers’ footsteps as a second-generation member, his son and granddaughters make up the 3rd and 4th generation of Meyers to serve the citizens of Modena.

George can fondly be remembered as a handyman and carpenter who was always looking to help out friends and family with their projects. George enjoyed traveling with his wife and their friends. They loved the Rhode Island beaches and cruising to Bermuda. He was lucky enough to have several lifelong friends that became family, so close that his children called them Aunt and Uncle. He loved his family more than anything and always would have a story whenever anyone would listen. His bad dad jokes and practical jokes will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

He is survived by one daughter: Elizabeth Meyer of Modena, NY and one son: Kenneth (Kimberly) Meyer of Modena, NY; he also has two grandchildren: Granddaughter, Kelsea (Jessica) Meyer of Pine Bush, NY; Granddaughter, Kassandra Meyer of Modena, NY; Honorary Grandson, William Coriston of Modena, NY along with Godson, Chippy (Beth) Belmore of Stone Ridge, NY.

The family would like to also acknowledge caregiver Missy Burriss for her compassionate care and her friendship for George in his final days.

A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, December 6th from 4pm-7pm at the Copeland-Hammerl Funeral Home, 162 South Putt Corners Rd, New Paltz, NY 12561.

A Funeral Home Service will begin at 7pm, including Fire Matic services and a memorial service to be led by family friend Bill McCormick. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in George’s memory to the Modena Fire Rescue Department PO Box 73 Modena NY 12548.
