Bruce N. Avery
May 15, 1957 – June 6, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Bruce Nelson Avery, age 67. A lifelong resident of Monticello NY, Bruce passed away on June 6, 2024, at Westchester Medical Center from complications of surgery. The son of Herbert and Palma Avery, born May 15, 1957, in Monticello NY. With his old school values, he was a man of routine (including watching Jeopardy & Wheel of Fortune nightly), and though he had a side of stubbornness, a kinder, more selfless, caring & loyal man could not be found.

Bruce is survived by his mother Palma Brochu Avery at home, sisters Bonnie J Avery of Spokane, WA and Sue Ellen Goldsmith & favorite brother-in-law Howie of Monticello, NY, and their children Mathew Goldsmith of Mongaup Valley, NY & Allie Goldsmith of Brookline, MA. Lifelong friend (“brothers” as Mom would say) Alvie Osborn. Cousins Jimmy, Cindi, Betty, Nancy & Linda. He was predeceased by his father Herbert W. Avery, cousins Laurie, Carl & Gene.

He graduated from Monticello High School in 1975 and shortly after started his career with Kristt Kelly Co. where, in his role, he became known as “the copy repair guy” until his passing. He was a member & treasurer of Hiram Jones Hunting Camp for almost 50 years. Bruce always enjoyed motorsports, adventure, and a challenge. In his teen years he was very active with the Southwoods Motorcycle Club. A broken bone was a setback to his motorcycle racing and was the beginning of lifelong leg issues. For a time, he enjoyed boating and later he moved on to snowmobiling with the Sullivan Sled Bandits.

Family & Friends are invited to gather on June 14th, 2024, from 4:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home in Monticello, NY. A funeral service will be held on June 15th, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello, NY.

Bruce had a love for dogs, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sullivan County SPCA, 104 Rock Hill Dr, Rock Hill, NY 12775 or an animal rescue shelter of your choice.
