Dutchess Jail pods open under one year old

POUGHKEEPSIE – The temporary
jail cell “pods” have been at the Dutchess County Jail have
been open and housing inmates for about seven months with a savings in
the cost of housing inmates in other county jails.
The state Commission on Corrections has ordered the county to come up
with a permanent solution to the overcrowding situation at the county
jail in Poughkeepsie and County Executive Marcus Molinaro said his administration
continues to work on plans.
“Our goal is to create a permanent solution that strengthens the criminal justice system, that reduces county costs, reduces our recidivism, applies what is called restorative justice in order to break the cycle so individuals don’t recommit, and we want a model that the entire country can look to and that is what we are really developing as we speak,” Molinaro said.
A new permanent jail, with programs to reduce recidivism and address inmate core issues, will be constructed at the site of the present jail in the City of Poughkeepsie.
