CARMEL- By a vote of 8-0, Legislator William Gouldman was absent, the Putnam County Legislature has approved applying for more than $700,000 in grants to repair and renovate facilities countywide.

The action came at this week’s full meeting of the legislature when Legislator Greg Ellner who chairs the Physical Services Committee explained competitive funding opportunities were being offered through the state set forth in the 2024 Consolidated Funding Resources fund that allow for “repairing or renovating historic structures, strategic plans and economic development generating infrastructure projects expected to improve the economic and environmental conditions of county facilities while promoting social viability and vitality.”

The county’s application covers three projects: Restoring the columns and façade at the historical Putnam Courthouse in Carmel; Terry Hill Road-Route 311 roadway improvements in Lake Carmel in addition to a strategic plan for county owned buildings.

The price tag for the courthouse is estimated at $500,000 with the county hoping to recoup $250,000 in grants. The Lake Carmel infrastructure will cost taxpayers $1.8 million with $360,000 being returned in grants while the county owned buildings proposal carries a $200,000 estimate with the county hoping to recoup $100,000 in state funding.
